How to access an external drive that’s not recognized on a Mac
I am beyond frustrated!!!!! Here it is a situation that you all should do first before starting formating a good partition.
Run a live cd with linux , or if you have a dual boot windows then check in the other OS or in any other computer if the other OS is recognizing the usb hdd drive properly and if it is assinging it a drive letter. I say this because i recently updated a usbtoide driver and all my external hdd drives disappeared from explorer. Never use those programs that search for new drivers for your hardware , it is an advice i give to you all. The solution is that you probably have to insert your windows dvd in a drive a repair the windows to restore the old drivers.
Thank you so much!
Tried other tutorials I could find online but not one worked out for me. In the past I used my harddrive for backing up my macbook.

When I deleted those files and wanted to use the external drive for Windows it didn't find the disk. So glad it's working right now after having it formatted. It's been so long In my case, Disc Management detects the drive and shows it as being "uninitialized". I have this issue and am seeing my unknown disk under the Dick Management window, however when I right click, all options are grayed out minus the properties and help options. I am showing What can I do if my disk is too full to initialize or format? If it is not showing on disk mgmt how the f you are going to format it on disk mgmt?
Windows won't see the external HD but following your procedure using diskmgmt. It is partitioned and labelled "Healthy, primary partition". However I cannot change letter for the drive options are greyed nor does it show in file explorer. What now? Right-click where it says "Healthy, primary partition" in disk management and delete the existing volume. It was probably created by a different OS that Windows doesn't recognize. Once you do that, right-click again where it now has unallocated space, create a new volume, assign a drive letter in the popup wizard, and it should then be recognized in Windows explorer.
Thanx very much. Just a smiling visitor here to share the love: After few weeks of searching for a solution for my external USB issue it has now been resolved following your advice. Thank you. I can't recognize. It's loading heavily. Power runs but Also in disk management. Waiting for pretty long and show '' The directory name is invalid''.
How am I to copy files from my external hard drive, in order to save them from being wiped out, it I can't open the external hard drive in the first place? That's my problem. So this makes no sense. I plugged in other flash drives into my laptop ports and they up, so there is obviously a problem with the external hard drive and not the ports. I had to laugh at the post where someone said to copy files from the external hard drive in order to save them.
If I could see my files I wouldn't have to worry about doing anything to the hard drive!!!! Neither my Win 7 laptop or desktop will recognize the drive. Absolutely maddening.
Doesn't anybody make anything that works anymore? This is terrible advice. WHY would you not mention at the start rather than the very end that this process will wipe your hard drive?? I just wiped my son's entire university files off the hard drive. Hi Mike, I tried this step but still the problem persist, how did you do it, my driver when I format it.

External hard drive spins up, but won't mount. Help?
I tried this several times. I'm still having issues I don't think it is showing up on anything.. This just started a day or two ago I am having issues with my Seagate External HD, when i plug it in whether it be with a dock or the stock sata bridge card it came with, it beeps 3 times and starts spinning. I have connected to 2 windows 10 laptops and an apple macbook but the OS does not recognize the HD. Under disk management there is no other disk that shows up.
It seems like most of the videos that show how to fix this problem do not address my situation. Are there any suggestions that could help me? What if your backup was on this hard drive and you need files that are on the hard drive I could just reformat, that is if I didn't have all my school term papers and such on this drive itself.
In fact this was my back up drive for my laptop. That's my dilemma and not even the manufacture is any help I talked to three different people and not one told me the same thing and none of them managed to help me. I have to save the files on the backup external hard drive or I may flunk this semester all together. I need help, like today or it could be to late for my education.
My non school account recognise usb's but as soon as i go onto my school device it does not and i have to manually open it. Any solutions. The Simplest solution: My portable hard Drive was sounding like it was connected to windows but it was invisible. The only thing that worked was partitioning if that is the correct way to say it! Thanks for the clear step by step guys! No matter what I do, my device doesn't show up in the device manager.
What should I do then. What if the device is showing up in disk management but it says "no media"please reply or send me an email please? Hi there the fix of assigning a letter to the drive in the disk management area worked. Thanks so much.
